What is a draft claim, and when does it actually go out?
A draft is a claim that exists in your system and has not gone anywhere. It does not matter how it was built: by hand, from charges, by the assistant, or from a scanned superbill. Everything lands as a draft first.
A draft is:
- Editable. You can change anything on it.
- Invisible to the payer. It has not been sent, so nobody outside your office knows it exists.
- Honest about what is missing. It lists what still has to be filled in before it can go, like the place of service or the filing code.
- Traceable. Underneath the claim number is a line saying how it was made: created manually, created by the assistant on your behalf, created by Bill import.
It only leaves when a person presses Send. Nothing in the product sends a claim on its own, and no schedule can. That is the line between drafting work and spending money.
When you do send it, the system checks the claim first and asks you to confirm, telling you what the send costs and that it really does contact the payer.
You will find every draft in one place: on the Claims list, filtered to Draft. That pile is your unfinished work, and working it down is a normal part of the day. See How should I start my billing day?.
